| If looking to travel to Cuba in the near future but preferring to wait out the Castro regime’s stronghold, perhaps a prelude to what you might find there can be found with a stop at Hemingway’s Cuban Mojito Lounge in Cabo San Lucas. In contrast to the mega nightclub Cabo Wabo, directly across the street on Guerrero, Hemingway’s provides a much more intimate setting for enjoying all things Cuban, without denying the excellence that is found here in Mexico as well.
Some of Mexico’s most prized tequilas and premium beer are offered at the bar, and several Cuban rums, as well as its representative cocktail, called the Big Papa Mojito here for its larger size, is Hemingway’s signature drink. Stroll around and take in the many interesting things adorning the walls inside, such as framed Cuban images like Che Guevara and 1950s era American cars, or enjoy your mojito in the dimly lit, air-conditioned bar area, complete with satellite access on plasma television, and over-stuffed leather stools. Kick back with a drink in the homey sitting area with leather sofas and chairs for the utmost in sophistication and relaxation. Although small, the patio in front of Hemingway’s is great for puffing on your favorite Cuban cigar, star gazing, and being up-close and personal for the weekly musical performances. Saturday nights are really special at Hemingway’s, as live trova music, in the style of Cuba’s Silvio Rodriguez, creates romance from 8:30 p.m.-11:00 p.m.
True tequila connoisseurs and cigar smokers will no doubt head to the back of Hemingway’s, where an impressive humidor, tequila tasting area, and boutique await. Carrying a grand selection of imported cigars direct from Cuba, featuring cigar rolling demonstrations from time to time, and offering 1⁄2 oz. samplings of the finest tequila made, Hemingway’s is an adult’s Candy Land indeed. Shoppers will enjoy perusing the t-shirts, tobacco products, wood cigar boxes, and high-quality smoking paraphernalia like ashtrays. All credit cards and traveler’s checks accepted. Open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. (624) 143-9845. - Kirstin Frieze - 28 May 2008
