Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico

WHAT'S NEW

CORRIDOR BEACH ACCESS

The construction of the new Chileno Bay development is diverting old roads, and some access roads for corridor beaches have changed.  The new clearly marked signs now make Playa Chileno Bay much easier to find.  These same new roads provide a safer way to turn off the highway.

With plenty of preparation distance, whether coming from San Jose or San Lucas, Playa Chileno Bay access is obvious.  Blue and white signage overhead will give you kilometer distance to your exit.  The signs will say either Playa Chileno Bay or Playa Publica.  They are the same exit.  The new cloverleaf exit roads will lead you to the parking lot.  Leaving the beach, you will have the same clearly marked signs.  This cloverleaf design also provides a safe corridor turn around (Retorno) opportunity.  This is a busy beach on weekends.  Families and tourists flock to it for swimming and sunning.

Playa Santa Maria is easier to miss.  Coming from Cabo San Lucas, between kilometers 12 and 13 watch for a smaller and more difficult-to-catch, older blue and white sign on the right side of the road.  Coming from San Jose del Cabo, watch for the same type of sign with an arrow on it pointing across the highway toward the location of the beach.  However, in order to access the beach, you must continue on the highway to kilometer 13 before you have a chance to make your left-side turn around (Retorno).  Slow down to see the Retorno sign and prepare for your left turn.  Once on the opposite side of the four-lane, watch for the Playa Santa Maria sign again.  The landmark for it is a bus stop.  The exit to the beach is immediately after it.  A dirt road leads you to parking lot.  The effort makes the trip worthwhile because once there you’ll be treated to a lovely swim-able bay beach.

Desertica Multi-Adventure Park

Cabo’s newest attraction is, believe it or not, an old Western town that serves as a setting for this extraordinary place.  The town’s main square is complete with shops, a bank, and a cantina called “Corona Bar.”  Some of the park’s activities include buggy rides, off road 4x4, ATVs, desert safari, and horseback riding.  There’s also a welcome swimming pool.  Perhaps the most exciting attraction is the canopy canyon tour, with sixteen ultra-fast cables suspended at over 400 feet.  And not to be topped, the Tarzan swing is a combination of free-fall and pendulum. Whoa.

Casa Quiote Tequila Comes to Los Cabos

Casa Quiote tequila is now available in Los Cabos.  The distillery, located in the Jalisco highlands, produces 100% agave tequila under several labels including Cava Don Anastacio, Caballito Cerrero, Quiote, and tequila under the El Toril label.  The award-winning Cava Don Anastacio is offered in blanco, reposado and añejo varieties.  Each of the other labels, Caballito Cerrero, Quiote and El Toril, is produced in a variety of types as well.  Casa Quiote tequilas are perfect for smooth sipping or for blending into your favorite cocktails.  Its agave plants are grown with particular care in Atotonilco El Alto, strategically located in the renowned tequila-producing region of Jalisco, Mexico.  The Casa Quiote distillery has a production capacity of 250,000 liters a month and an aging capacity of 230,000 liters, making it a trusted label in the spirits market.  Be sure to look for Casa Quiote tequilas in stores and bodegas, or ask for it by name when you are ordering tequila at your favorite Los Cabos restaurant.  Visit www.tequilaquiote.com for more information.

Sky Events

Summer Solstice

The Summer Solstice, marking the official beginning of summer, takes place every year between June 20th and June 22nd.  It is the moment when the sun is shining directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer, the imaginary line around the Earth, located at latitude 23.5 degrees North.  Los Cabos’ latitude is approximately 22 degrees North, about 90 miles (167 kilometers) south of the Tropic of Cancer.  The Summer Solstice is the day with the greatest number of daylight hours, as opposed to the Equinox when there is an equal amount of daylight and darkness.  The Ancients marked Solstice with a variety of observations and ceremonies, rites and rituals.  All over the globe, there are astounding places and landmarks that have been identified as locations of solar examination using a variety of methods to measure the movement of objects in the sky and exact the time when a solstice would occur.  Perhaps the most celebrated sites are Stonehenge in England and Machu Picchu in Peru.  Mexico has several similar sites credited to the Mayan civilization’s solar observation and records.  Mexican sites have been identified by temples, pyramids, rock formations and geographic circles, located in the ancient cities of Mayapan; Dzibilchaltun; Uxmal; Teotihuacan; and Chichen Itza.  Scientists have determined that the 2008 Summer Solstice will occur at precisely 11:59pm (23:59 Universal Time in Greenwich, England) on June 20th.  The moment of the Summer Solstice in Cabo San Lucas will be at 6:59pm.

Mexican Celebrations

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is a day more celebrated in the United States than in Mexico.  The day’s significance lies in its tribute to patriotism and pride, similar to the Fourth of July in the United States.

In 1862, Mexico faced economic crises, which suspended its debt payments to the French, British and Spanish.  America was in the midst of a civil war, and France’s Napoleon III, bent on worldwide conquest, invaded Mexico with his sights on joining forces with the U.S. Confederacy and dividing up the U.S.A.

Napoleon sent a 6,000-man army equipped with the latest military weaponry to Puebla, 100 miles north of Mexico City. The French, though having not lost a battle in 50 years, were overcome by the local militia of 4,000 Mestizos and Zapotec Indians, armed with antiquated muskets and machetes, and commanded by a young inexperienced Mexican general, Ignacio Zaragoza.

The French returned a year later and seized Mexico City, installing Austria’s Maximilian as Emperor.  Mexican President Benito Juarez fled to Washington D.C. to run his government in exile.  Lincoln was unable to provide overt aid to Mexico for political reasons.  However, U.S. Army General Sherman later reported he “misplaced 30,000 rifles near the Mexican border” that mysteriously ended up in the hands of the beleaguered Mexican army.  Emperor Maximilian and his wife Carlotta met their fate being captured and executed by firing squad.

The Battle of Puebla on May 5th 1862 proved that the young Mexico could resist invading foreign armies.  Mexico’s defiance provided inspiration to people throughout Latin America as they struggled for their freedom from colonial rule.  Cinco de Mayo was a rather minor battle, but its significance is celebrated with fervent patriotic significance.

Many Americans often confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day (from Spain), which is September 16th.  That is the day in 1810 when Hidalgo rang the church bells in Dolores, Mexico and cried “Revolucion!”  Every year on that date, Mexico celebrates with food, drink, colorful parades, and fireworks.  Come in September and be a part of that celebration!

Major New Art Gallery in San Jose

Frank Arnold is considered “one of the big eight” abstract expressionists along the lines of Gorky, de Kooning, and Hans Hoffman.  Arnold, a classic abstract expressionist, brings to Los Cabos an emotional and energetic style of painting originally conceived by New York artists in the 1940s and 1950s.  This art style, along with subsequent art trends such as Pop Art and Minimalism, are major American contributions to world art history.  Arnold has constructed a new 5,000 square foot studio, gallery and residence in San Jose’s Art District.  This gallery adds to the emergent international art scene in San Jose.  The new gallery is being built on the scale of a small museum and is located in the northern section of the San Jose Art District behind Plaza Paulina.

Cabo San Lucas Optimist Club KIDSMART Program

Thanks to the generosity of Annie Murphy, owner of the Pez Gato boat cruises, the Optimist Club of Cabo San Lucas’ KIDSMART program was able to take 60 academically gifted children from low-income families on a day trip to see the whales up-close.  KIDSMART’s goal is for children of impoverished families to stay in school instead of having to drop out and go to work to help their families maintain their households.  The program provides school uniforms, proper shoes and a monthly “beca” of about $20 US to children who achieve a B+ average, thus offering a hand-up rather than a hand-out.  KIDSMART is aimed at children ages eight to eighteen, and not only have many of these children graduated high school, but several of the young people sponsored by the Optimists Club have moved on to university or technical colleges.  This was statistically unlikely without the support of this program.  Also available through this program are classes in English and computer studies.  Currently, there are 76 children in the Cabo San Lucas KIDSMART program, half boys and half girls.  The Optimist Club of Cabo San Lucas is ready to expand the program to help more of the youth in this community flourish, but needs more sponsors to make it happen.  KIDSMART is a proven success so when you’re ready to get involved in this good work, please contact Robyn Littlewood at 044 (624) 129-6135.
