When an orchestra conductor raises his baton and sends all the musicians into a harmonized flood of sound, it tends to get your attention. When you get up close and personal with a fireworks show, it tends to get your attention. When you open the menu at Villa Serena, it gets your attention. Let me explain. When I went to Villa Serena with a friend who was visiting Cabo I had no expectations, so when I opened the menu and saw the prices I felt as if I was in a time warp. The prices were so reasonable I knew we would be able to really explore the menu, taste the food and drink the drinks without taking out a loan.
Villa Serena is in the Corridor about 10 minutes outside of Cabo San Lucas. It is a deceptively simple, palapa-roofed restaurant with ocean views and a dipping pool for those hot afternoons. I would describe the food at Villa Serena as ‘tourist happy’ as there seems to something for everyone and it’s all simply good and unpretentious.
Beginnings include: Guacamole ($4.40), Nachos ($4.40), Quesadillas ($5.00), French Fries ($2.20), Tortilla Soup ($4.40), Clam Chowder ($5.00), Squid or Fish Sticks ($7.00). See what I mean about the prices. Wait it gets even better. Lobster for $9.95! For my money the house specialty is lobster. If I was ever in doubt, it is printed on the back of every waiter’s shirt. Two reasonably sized lobster tails with drawn butter, rice and vegetables. However attractive the lobster special it is the combos: Steak & Lobster ($28), Steak & Shrimp ($28), Lobster & Shrimp $28.00, Lobster & Pork Ribs, ($22), Villa Serena Special (Lobster, Shrimp & Lamb Chops) ($26) that keeps the customers coming back.
The service is tight and attentive. In fact we accidentally threw the service staff a curve ball. After dinner Jeffrey had a craving for something sweet and in a retro mood ordered Drambuie. The waiter asked us to repeat the order and looking like we had ordered kryptonite disappeared to look for Lex Luther. For the next five minutes we heard ‘drambuie’ echo into the bar, through the kitchen and back out to the floor like a lost ping-pong ball. We may have ordered kryptonite after all with our ‘Spanglish’! Never mind…it arrived in a snifter all we could do is smile. I went in for the ‘show’ dessert. Heck they even dim the lights when they wheel the flambé cart to tableside to make the out-of-this-world-sweet-and-boozy Spanish Coffee. Maybe we were in a time warp but it is a great place to be, this place they call Villa Serena.
