Dining at La Casa del Pozo is like eating a wonderful home cooked family meal in mainland Mexico, with secret recipes and ingredients that separate this Mexican eatery from all other restaurants in Los Cabos. The service is attentive and the menu is extensive, offering authentic dishes that are nearly impossible to find anywhere else in Cabo. La Casa del Pozo specializes in steaks and seafood, and Damiana is the house signature sauce.
Damiana is a shrub and liquor native to Central and South America that has a numbingly distinct and sweet flavor that resonates deep within your entire body. Damiana has been used for medicinal purposes by indigenous Central and South American natives, who also claim that it produces an aphrodisiac effect.
La Casa del Pozo is situated around a 150 year-old water well, which explains the restaurant’s name, “The Water Well House.” The famous margaritas at La Casa del Pozo are always served with Blue Agave tequila matured in the state of Jalisco using a traditional homemade process of aging the tequila in Canadian oak barrels, which supposedly prevents the hangover.
For an appetizer, try the delicious shrimp or crab empanada. For an entrée, try the house specialty of Damiana shrimp or fish, both cooked to perfection amid Damiana liquor. The Mango fish is served with a sweet and sour mango sauce. I ordered the Tequila Viejo Shrimp (Old Tequila Shrimp), which were deliciously flambéed in tequila and sautéed in garlic, served amid a warm bed of orange squash and vegetables.
The rich flavors of the shrimp were further evoked by the presence of homemade tequila. Xochitl, a native of Guadalajara, ordered the Cazuela Guadalajara, which is beef served in a juicy meat sauce with bacon, beans, and a tasty green sauce, which is traditionally eaten after taking a bite of a warm corn tortilla and dipped into a clay pot made in Jalisco. The portions were large, and if you’re searching for something different then endeavor to discover the distinctly authentic sensation of truly Mexican cuisine at La Casa del Pozo.
I recommend saving room for the delicious dessert liquors and tequila coffees, which are the perfect ways to end your evening. La Casa del Pozo has a seating capacity for 40, and is located on the corner of Paseo del Pescador Street and Cabo San Lucas Bay Road, across from Marina Sol Condominiums. Call (624) 143-6569. The restaurant is open from 3:30 pm to 10 pm. Entrees are from $12 to $28 US.Matthew Dexter
