Mexico Mystic Restaurant
Los Cabos Guide - Restaurant and Dining Review - September 2006 - by Anna Urbanik

Cabo San Lucas has no shortage of outstanding restaurants, and with the recent opening of Mexico Mystic the rich get richer. With its double-tiered, open-air large patio, this new spot’s essence lays in prehispanic cooking methods and natural ingredients. Using clay, stone and wood in the preparation process, Chef Flaviano Morales ensures the continuity of indigenous flavors and traditions.

An exciting buzz comes from the open, mural-painted kitchen, lit up by flames and filled with an aroma of mesquite-grilled surf and turf specialties. Around it, a spacious dining room, romantically decorated with wrought iron chairs and tables. Lit by large hanging candle holders and braids of festive lights, it sets the scene for an ideal evening for two or a fun family outing.

Greeted by Owner Sergio Garza Adame, we are served a Guerrero state traditional delicacy—an appetite-whetting sope (cooked corn dough with refried beans, cheese, lettuce and cream.) Followed by a fabulous Passion Cesar Salad prepared tableside with touches of garlic, anchovies, lime, and olive oil, served on a bed of crispy lettuce and topped with yet crispier croutons. Other appetizer choices include Little Octopus with butter and garlic or a more traditional tortilla soup. Lobster and steak are ubiquitous among the main courses, but you’ll also find shrimp, catch of the day and chicken. I go for the shrimp-stuffed chile relleno, with a surprising touch of banana, smothered with red sauce, topped with crumbly white panela cheese—luxury by the spoonful. The hand-made tortilla Lobster Enchiladas are to die for as well. Most dishes come with rice, refried black beans and guacamole that are just as tasty as the main dish. The signature plate at Mexico Mystic is a seafood combination of lobster, jumbo shrimp, crab, fish, and octopus. The owner’s vote goes to Lobster with Rib Eye, both cooked over mesquite wood and accompanied by baked potato and veggies. Having feasted upon bountiful offerings of this new establishment, dessert seemed a little over the top. But for the sake of getting the complete picture I forced myself (yeah, right) to order a piece of cheesecake, fluffy as a cloud and deserving a standing ovation—if I could only have risen from the chair.

In Mexico Mystic everything is tasteful—from the professional, attentive service to delightfully presented plates. The owner says the secret lays in details and in always trying to convert clients’ wishes into reality. And most of all, this restaurant is a team affair. From the remodeling work and designing the hand-made menus, through preparing and serving the food, everybody chips in to the overall excellence of your dining experience. With seating capacity for 100 and groups up to 250 this spot becomes an excellent venue for your special event. Prices range from $5 U.S to $16 U.S. for appetizers, and from $15 U.S. to $38 U.S. for entrées. Open for dinner from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Paseo del Pescador.
