Here we are at the newest Nick-San Japanese Restaurant located in The Shoppes At Palmilla. My companion spent a year living in Japan and also took cooking lessons; she is the perfect choice to join me in reviewing this fabulous establishment.
We observe our surroundings as we are seated in high-backed wood chairs with suede seats. There is a small bar in the corner, and tall bamboo culms in containers decorate the interior with lots of marble and stone. A waterfall cascades along one wall, and the sushi bar extends long into the large interior dining area, allowing diners to be up close and personal watching the art of creating the many fine dishes. The outdoor terrace offers a lovely view of the Sea of Cortés, a perfect spot for evening dining. The clever logo of a fish skeleton looks as if a hungry cat just had a fine meal.
Among many items offered, we must try the sashimi with cilantro, and scallops, salmon, yellowtail, and seared tuna all with outstanding sauces. The fried rice cake with spicy tuna becomes a favorite of ours, as is the lobster roll, soft shell crab, and the spinach and crab wrap. If it swims and can be hooked, it will land here. You’re bound to find something you love. We certainly have.
Thin sliced ginger adds a bite, but be careful with the wasabi! It will take your breath away. Japanese food has taken its place among the finest in gourmet eating, but the humble bowl of rice remains reminiscent of the heritage of simple country cooking. Thanks to tofu, miso, sushi, green tea, and soba, Japanese food is among the healthiest in the world. Using chopsticks is a must, as is sipping warm or cold sake. We toast our good fortune to partake in authentic Japanese cuisine in Los Cabos.
It is a pleasure meeting and talking with Carmen Carbajal, one of six Mexican family members that own Nick-San. The dishes keep coming until we tell them to stop; we have to save room for the tempura ice cream! The service is outstanding; it is obvious the relationship between guest and server is of prime importance.
